On Justice Scalia

I try to stay away from politics on social media... But this deserves a mention.

I went to law school when gay marriage wasn't a reality for pretty much anyone...and reading through (and disagreeing with) pretty much every one of Scalia's decisions was oddly comforting. It was polarizing in a way that connected those of us that vehemently opposed his opinions and brought us closer together, huffing and puffing about the indignity, insensitivity, and incomprehensibility of such scathing decisions.

He was like Russia at the olympics - we would essentially disregard his vote.

It made me think: we so readily recall those whose opinions we disagree with, while comfortably forgetting those who quietly join in our crusades of what we believe to be morally appropriate. Only the extremes stand out.

It's human nature.

Having a formidable foe, whose strength of conviction is consistent and well articulated, helps us become clear on the finer points of our own arguments. We all rise to the level of opposition presented to us, or we falter.

The loss of such a dynamic, powerful, intelligent and strong opponent is a true tragedy. Justice Scalia, you will be missed.
